Algae formation
Algae formation can sometimes be a persistent problem. Despite a correct chlorine level, in certain situations algae can still grow in the pool and even ‘get used’ to a certain chlorine level. This then results in green deposits on the walls, cloudy (green) water or fluffy spots.
Roughly speaking, there are two different types of algae that you can find in a swimming pool:
- Floating algae: green and mustard algae. These usually settle on the walls of the pool and can often easily be brushed off. Or they float in the water and can turn the water green.
- Black algae look a bit ‘fluffy’ and often settle in places where the flow is minimal. For example the stairs or in deeper parts of the pool.
Removing algae
Brush the algae away first, then apply a chlorine shock with Melpool 55/G or Melpool 70/G. Then flocculate the dead algae with a flocculant. Then, if necessary, remove the flakes from the bottom with a swimming pool vacuum cleaner and rinse or clean the (sand)filter well.
Advice: Do the algae not go away despite a chlorine shock? In that case, the chlorine stabilizer content (cyanuric acid) is probably too high. If this value is too high, you should refresh a part of your pool water.
Anti-algae: In case the algae come back quickly due to a high biological load of the water or because certain places in the pool do not have a good flow, an anti-algae agent can be dosed. Melpool has developed various anti-algae products;

- Don’t over-dose! The water may then foam or become cloudy
- Only for swimming pools, not for (swimming) ponds. Can disturb the biological balance
